27 Chinese Officials Sentenced After Ultramarathon Incident

Government China reportedly sentenced 27 officials after the death of 21 participants of the 100 km ultramarathon held in May 2021. That incident is one tragedy Sports deadliest in the world.

Launch CNBC, one of the officials who was sentenced was the head of Jingtai district. He was fired from his department after an investigation was conducted.

Other officials held accountable are the mayor and Communist Party chairman of Baiyin city, a city under Jingtai’s jurisdiction. The remaining officials related to the event received disciplinary warnings.

During the investigation, Jingtai county party leader Li Zuobi reportedly fell from his apartment building and died. Police ruled out the suspicion of murder as Li’s death is still being investigated.

It is not clear whether Li’s death was linked to the deadly marathon race or not.

For information, 21 runners died of hypothermia when very cold weather suddenly fell at the race venue in Gansu province.

Launch CNA, the researchers say besides being caused by extreme weather, the tragedy was also caused by unprofessional organization and maintenance.

China’s sports administration said it was suspending all high-risk sporting events that did not have regulatory bodies, legal rules and clear safety standards.

Activities suspended include mountain and desert sports, wingsuit flying and long-distance running.
