2020 ELECTIONS – PLD accuses Luis Abinader of pressuring the president of the JCE to suspend elections

The Dominican Liberation Party and its allies accused the presidential candidate of the Dominican Revolutionary Party, Luis Abinader, of pressuring the president of the Central Electoral Board (JCE), Julio César Castaños, for the suspension of municipal elections.

Juan Temístocles Montás, interim president of the PLD, said that Luis Abinader’s pressure was due to the realization that the PLD and the Allied forces were winning in 126 of 158 municipalities and 177 of 235 districts.

He warned that they will not rest until they are clearly exposed to public opinion and to justice the true responsible for this situation and those who bet on chaos and disorder and who use as strategy “the worse, the better”.

He called the militancy and the country to calm and peaceful coexistence, and that he waits as soon as possible for those elections to be held again and that the popular will be established that will undoubtedly favor the PLD and the allied forces again.

He showed his disagreement with the decision of the total suspension, since if the problem was limited to places with electronic votes, he understood that the municipalities that were using the manual vote should be allowed to continue exercising their right to vote normally, as it was communicated to the JCE by the general secretary of the PLD, Reinaldo Pared Pérez.

He said that what corresponds for the good of the country and democratic stability is to apply as quickly as possible what the constitutional order establishes after pointing out that the JCE has demonstrated a lack of responsibility and authority with that decision for what it now has the obligation to reconvene the elections as soon as possible.

Likewise, he informed that these must be convened within a period not exceeding 30 days. He also stated that the Constitution establishes that the elections must be separated, and the municipal authorities have to take constitutionally on April 24.

He regretted that thousands of citizens who took to the streets this Sunday to exercise their legitimate right to vote have been deprived of that right.

He said that the Dominican Republic has had years of mature democracy, social peace and economic prosperity, after pointing out that it is its most valuable legacy.
