144 tents, 1152 beds: fair ready for refugees | Regional

Hannover – It is an act of strength and a strong sign of helpfulness.

In just three days, the professional fire brigade, with the support of many volunteers, prepared Hall 27 on the exhibition grounds as an emergency shelter for refugees from the Ukraine.

36 “villages” separated by fences and tarpaulins, each with four tents, cupboards, tables and chairs, have been created on 32,000 square meters. There are eight beds in each of the 144 tents – 1152 in total. There are also a number of cots available. “We try to offer as much individuality and privacy as possible,” says fire chief Dieter Rohrberg.

The facilities in the exhibition hall also include 80 shower areas in containers, washing machines and dryers. Leisure activities, especially for children, are to follow. “People should come to rest,” emphasizes Mayor Belit Onay (Greens).

It is unclear when the first people will move in. 200 refugees have just moved from the fire station at Goetheplatz to accommodation provided by the state reception authority.

The city has already received around 800 e-mails with private offers of help. Social department head Sylvia Bruns (FDP) announces a task force to coordinate the offers. Report to [email protected]
