In two cases, neighbors noticed several people shortly before the break-ins into their neighbors’ homes and called the police.
A parked, silver Mercedes Coupé of the older C-Class with Spanish license plates caught the attention of a witness (55) who lives in Schnellermaarstrasse on Tuesday afternoon (December 22nd) at 3:40 p.m. She saw a man who went purposefully to the property of her neighbor (51), returned and then re-entered the property with another vehicle occupant. When the men tried to pry open a garden gate with a silver tool, the witness drew attention to herself by clearing her throat loudly, whereupon the perpetrators fled. They got into the car and drove off in the direction of Zieskovener Strasse. The witness then informed the police.
At 6:25 p.m., a 34-year-old woman noticed a man in Buir at a car with Dortmund license plates. Since she could not assign him on Von-Arndt-Strasse, she spoke to him. The stranger gave a flimsy reason for his presence. Another witness (47) became suspicious and continued to watch the man. In the garden of his neighbors he also discovered two other men who illuminated the garden with flashlights. The witness spoke to the men, whereupon they immediately got into the car and drove off in the direction of Gottfried-Beyenburg-Strasse. The police officers who were called up found neither signs of burglary nor any other criminal offense, but suspected that the courageous intervention prevented a break-in.
In the darker months of the year, the police not only rely on good security technology but also on a functioning neighborhood to efficiently prevent burglaries.
