You better not touch the black pistol. Mazda will remain the only diesel model in Europe

The Mazda offer will have a significant effect on the tightening of emission regulations, which will come in 2021. Almost all diesel models will end up in its European offer. The CX-5 SUV will remain an honorable exception.

It started with the smallest Mazda, a two, a CX-3 and a three. You can no longer buy these with diesel engines, they are available exclusively with Skyactiv-G atmospheric petrol units and, in the case of the troika, with Skyactiv-X “petrol diesel”, which is to combine the advantages of a petrol and diesel engine.

For other models, pruning is coming in the fall. British Coach has already informed that the Skyactiv-D diesels end up in the Mazda 6 sedan and station wagon. It’s the same in the Czech Republic. “We have several cars in stock,” adds Markéta Kuklová, a spokeswoman for the Czech car dealership.

The diesel version of the CX-30 crossover is also coming to an end. Although they still remain in the price list, the car cannot be put into production. Mazda still has a limited number of warehouse cars available in Europe, which it is able to supply to potential buyers.

Next year, the only diesel Mazda should remain the larger SUV CX-5. But at least at the beginning of it, he chooses his diesel break. The car will be modernized at the beginning of next year, but diesel engines will not be available at first, it will appear later.

The reason for Mazda’s oil cut is the tightening of emission regulations. From next year, the tolerance will decrease, resp. the permissible difference between the oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions emitted during the laboratory test and during the test in normal operation. With the exception of the CX-5, Mazda bypassed its diesel engines without selective catalytic reduction, ie the injection of urea into the exhaust pipe, which reduces the amount of NOx.

Its decision is therefore, in essence, proof that without urea, diesel will not meet the strictest standards. One can suspect that any modification of the cars would be too expensive. In addition, the Mazda 6 is already a relatively old model, the current third generation has been in production since 2012, and two years ago the car underwent only a significant facelift.

In addition, it must be emphasized that sales of diesel engines are not significant for Mazda; in the first nine months of this year, according to the Association of Importers of Automobiles with Diesel Mazda, 30 customers left the showroom and 1,276 chose petrol.

Of course, the changes in Mazda’s offer do not apply to the purely electric crossover MX-30 and also to the sports roadster MX-5, which was offered from the beginning exclusively with petrol engines.
