Yes, I wish (not too expensive): These couples had the budget wedding of their dreams

Yvonne (43) and Peter (41) van der Laan

  • Married: January 11, 2009
  • Location: Pushkar, Rajasthan, India
  • Number of guests: 80
  • Budget: 300 euro

Yvonne: “We were traveling in India when Peter proposed to me. We had just helped out with a street children project for a month and Peter had already told people there that he was playing with the idea. They offered to organize a big wedding party for us. “Do it,” we said, as long as it does not run into the thousands of euros, we think it’s fine. They went to a priest for us, with whom they chose a suitable date. It became 11-01, a date with as many ones as possible. in it, that would bring happiness. We got married the Indian way, with the difference that our wedding lasted one day instead of the usual several days. “

“I bought my dress at the market with the ladies I knew from there. A fantastically beautiful red, with stitches and beads. One day before the wedding I went with the women to the beautician, where I drew henna on my hands and feet. On the wedding day I was dressed and made up by the ladies completely.

When you get married in India, there is a parade, where the groom usually goes through town on horseback to the bride’s house, accompanied by drums and dancing friends and family. That is how Peter did it, with everyone who knew us in the meantime. “

“In the building where we got married, a priest came and a fire was made, which was to burn for three days. One of the most important rituals was that we had to walk around that fire seven times. After the ceremony we held on the roof of the house. the building was a feast, with delicious Indian food. Very special for the street children, because they don’t get such a festive meal every day. The most moving thing was that some of them arrived with presents, while they had hardly any possessions.

The entire wedding cost us about 300 euros. That includes a 25 euro bribe for a local police officer who got wind of the whole thing and found something that was not allowed. Our wedding was a big happening anyway: two TV stations and an Indian newspaper came by to interview us.

It was a pity that our friends and family weren’t there on our wedding day, especially our parents didn’t like that. But it just fit for us. At that time we had already been traveling for a year and had lost our hearts to that street children project. Now, eleven years later, we have already been back about five times. We have a bond for life with the people there. “

Patries Post (52) and Jos van Schaik (53)

  • Married: 31 december 2002
  • Location: A camping farm in Someren
  • Number of guests: 60
  • Budget: 1500 euro

Patries: “We didn’t have a single cent to make when we got married. Jos is a pilot and had just financed his own – very expensive – training, so we had to be creative to make it an unforgettable wedding day with little money. wedding, a special date and a great opportunity to kick off the new year with all the guests.

I had bought my dress, an aubergine-colored evening dress, on sale for 100 euros, my husband wore his dark blue application suit. Our daughter Puck had made the dress of our daughter Puck with fabric from the market. I made the bridal bouquet myself, I did my hair and make-up myself and our wedding rings came from a second-hand jeweler. The photographer was an acquaintance of ours, who we did not have to pay. Our wedding car was our own Fiat Panda, whose seats we covered ourselves with fabric from the market. We made it in the newspaper because it was such a special wedding car. “

“One thing we thought was very important: that there was a fireplace at the wedding location. The camping farm we chose had a very large one. It was also a bit boring and bare there, so we spruced it up with Christmas lights and flower arrangements. I made myself with flowers from the market. With Puck, then 6, I made tablecloths from cheesecloth from the market, stencilled with golden crowns at the bottom. We asked everyone to save glass jars, which we painted and used for tea lights and floating candles. It was a great creative project with the whole family, which was beautiful in itself. And it also looked super fun. “

Secretly on singing lessons

“All guests could stay the night. My husband often sleeps in hotels for his work and had saved up soaps, shampoos and toothbrushes on his travels. We put them on the guests’ beds. The catering, a buffet, was the most expensive. Chips, We had toast and wine from Aldi, which cost about 500 euros in all, my sisters-in-law had baked oliebollen, after all, it was New Year’s Eve, and everyone had brought their own fireworks to go outside.

As a surprise I have I’ll Be There by Mariah Carey sung for Jos. After he proposed to me a year earlier, I secretly took singing lessons to give him a special gift. Nobody knew about it except Puck. That moment was of course a great vale of tears. It certainly became unforgettable, despite our limited budget. Now, 18 years later, people are still talking about it. “

Lindsay (37) and Dennis (43) Charles

  • Married: 16 september 2016
  • Location: A farm in Gilze en Rijen
  • Number of guests: 50
  • Budget: 2000 euro

Lindsay: “We didn’t want to spend a ridiculous amount of money on one day, besides we were saving for a trip to Australia. Of course you can get married on a Monday morning and not celebrate, but you should only get married once: the must be done properly.2000 euros is also a lot of money, but we thought that was manageable.

A friend of mine who was getting a divorce was so kind to give me her wedding dress – at 4500 euros -; it fit perfectly. I would never buy such an expensive dress myself. You only wear it once! For everything that contains the word ‘faithful’, you immediately pay the main prize. Not normal. Such a wedding cake also costs a fortune, why would you pay for such a small moment? We made a cake ourselves with two of my bridesmaids. Isn’t it about being together? That is important, not the amount of euros you throw at it. You don’t need more than each other, lots of great friends and family and a wedding official. “

“We wanted a casual, relaxed atmosphere. Before that, the farm where I worked occasionally was perfect. We asked if we could get married there and they thought it was an honor. We didn’t have to pay for it, they only asked for a We thought that this was disproportionate, so we offered to plant a tree and turned planting that tree into a ritual, instead of exchanging rings.

We got married under a very old, thick beech tree, at a full moon. Very idyllic. We had hung those colored lights ourselves, which created an enchanting atmosphere. Beforehand, I had organized a few craft evenings with friends to make the decorations. That may sound cuddly, but it was very fun and meaningful. “

“For the ceremony I came riding on my own horse. We had their own straw bale delivered for all our guests to sit on all day. At the ceremony we had them laid out in a semicircle around the tree. When we met each other. We said yes, we toasted children’s champagne and that homemade cake, we hardly ever drink, so this suited us well.

Prefer a cleaning crew

Afterwards we had a barbecue and we all ate at picnic tables. Later the fire pits turned on and we roasted marshmallows. Our entertainment cost nothing: a friend of mine is very good horseback riding and put on a music show. We arranged that music ourselves; my husband has a mixing console and speakers, we asked friends if they wanted to play a playlist we put together beforehand. It all came together beautifully. Apart from the photographer, we knew everyone on the site, which gave such a beautiful atmosphere.

The bridal suite in which we spent the night was ultimately the largest expense. And then we had the simplest. I wouldn’t have wanted to get married otherwise. Even if we had had more money at the time, I wouldn’t have done anything else. Although, maybe one thing: I would have invested in a cleaning crew for afterwards. Because the fact that we had to do that the next day was a bit mood-killing. “

Borsato’s Budget Wedding can be seen on RTL 5 from October 28.
