Won selection: This is the best car purchase of the year in Norway

The competition in the new car market has never been tougher. Here in Norway, most things are now about electric cars – and here buyers have a lot to choose from this year.

But what exactly is the best new car purchase right now? The NAF magazine Motor has just named it. The finalists were these cars:

Kia EV6, VW ID.4, Skoda Enyaq, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Nio ES8, BMW iX and BYD Tang.

All are electric cars. The car that goes all the way to the top in NAF’s “Best car purchase of the year 2021” comes from South Korea, is an SUV – and it has a design that has attracted a lot of attention.

The highest score ever

The jury thought the look clearly made Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 one of the ten finalists in the first round of this year’s selection. Whatever you think – this car has a design that is impossible to ignore. Here, Hyundai has thought outside the box. Ioniq 5 has a clear retro feel, at the same time as it is modern.

Among Motor’s car tests, the car also received the highest score ever, when it was tested this summer. Its practical features – and price – meant that it finally pulled the longest straw of all in this year’s selection, in fierce competition with another electric bestseller, namely the Tesla Model Y.

Fancy this? Then you should choose smart

Cheaper to own

It was the charging characteristics that decided, the car has a system that provides a charging speed of up to 200 kW. With a combined 400- and 800-volt system, such as the Porsche Taycan, it can charge 100 kilometers in just 4.5 minutes, under ideal conditions. In other words: Here you do not have to stand for a long time at the charging station, the times you need to fast charge.

Motor has also looked at what it costs to operate the various cars. Their calculations also show that the Ioniq 5 is cheaper to own and drive than a Tesla Model Y. The price per kilometer is NOK 6.09 against NOK 7.00 for the Tesla Y.

Cupra cheapest to own

The lowest kilometer price among the finalists is Cupra Born, which ends up in third place in the selection, with a price of 4.56 kroner per kilometer. Then this is also another type of car. Born is the sister model to Volkswagen ID.3, the two are almost identical.

The jury consisted of Øivind A. Monn-Iversen, journalist and test manager at Motor, Anette Berve, advisor in the consumer department at NAF, Audun Bergerud, technical consultant at NAF, Marianne Søhagen, senior advisor for traffic safety at NAF, Ulrica Risberg, marketing and communications director at NAF and Peter Raaum, editor-in-chief of Motor.
