A group of car thieves from West Yorkshire, England were caught after being caught stealing a Mitsubishi Outlander worth £180,000 or around Rp 3.5 billion. In their action, the group of thieves was assisted by a device similar to the old Nintendo Game Boy console without breaking windows or locks.
Quoted by the BBC, Sunday (10/10/2021) West Yorkshire Police have arrested three perpetrators of the theft, namely Dylan Armer, Christopher Bowes and Thomas Poulson. The three had stolen five Mitsubishi Outlanders by using the gadget to open the car’s security system.
CCTV footage released by West Yorkshire Police shows two hooded men unplugging the power supply from the PHEV car. A moment later the car door can be opened and the thieves can easily drive using the device.
West Yorkshire Police said the £20,000 device could unlock and start a car in just seconds. The theft has been going on since last July.
The police are still conducting further investigations into how the device works.
Armer has been sentenced to 30 months in prison while Bowes and Poulson were sentenced to 22 months, suspended for two years, for their involvement in the theft. All three, from Yorkshire, were jailed at Leeds Crown Court after confessing to the theft.
A similar tool used by the thief has been sold since 2020. Quoted by The Drive, device owners only need to walk closer to the car and activate the system by pressing the lock/unlock button on the door handle. The Lock Tool scans and records the signal emanating from the car and allows the user to enter the car with what it considers to be an authorized remote.
It is not yet known whether this tool is available for all makes and models of vehicles, but the cars that have been hacked include Kia, Hyundai, Nissan, and Mitsubishi.
