Today, the Austrian government has increased the threat of quarantine measures for people who have not been vaccinated against KOVID-19. This is happening at a time of significant growth in new cases in the country, the Associated Press and DPA reported.

“It is already clear that this winter and Christmas there will be inconvenience for the unvaccinated,” said Chancellor Alexander Schalenberg. According to him, it may be a matter of days before a strict curfew is introduced for the unvaccinated. He described the country’s vaccination rate, which is about 65 percent, as “shamefully low” and called on Austrians to be vaccinated.

The number of new cases of the virus in Austria has risen again to record levels. According to the authorities, 11,975 infections were registered in the last 24 hours. The situation in hospitals and clinics is dire, and doctors and nurses are calling for tougher measures. The seven-day incidence reached 751 cases per 100,000 people – three times higher than in neighboring Germany.

Earlier, the government tried to impose regional quarantine measures on the unvaccinated, at least in the worst-affected provinces of Upper Austria and Salzburg, but these efforts failed due to resistance from provincial leaders.

Austria has taken a number of measures in recent weeks to limit the spread of the coronavirus and encourage more people to be vaccinated. New rules came into force on Monday, prohibiting unvaccinated people who have not contracted the virus from visiting restaurants, hotels, hairdressers and major public events.
