Who We Are – News – 2023 ™ FIFA Women’s World Cup ™: FIFA Council to designate host country (s) on 25 June

In the context of the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic and the postponement of the FIFA Council meeting scheduled for early June 2020 in Addis Ababa, FIFA was today able to confirm to the candidate member associations that the designation of the host country (ies) of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 ™ by the said Council will take place on June 25, during a meeting which will take place online.

The current application process is the most competitive in the history of the FIFA Women’s World Cup ™, with four files in the running:

  • joint application of the Australian Football Federation and the New Zealand Football Federation;
  • candidacy of the Brazilian Football Federation;
  • candidacy of the Colombian Football Federation;
  • candidacy of the Japanese Football Federation.

All the application files, as well as their respective summaries, are available on FIFA.com :

“FIFA intends to implement the most exhaustive, objective and transparent application procedure in the history of the competition. This will be part of our overall commitment to women’s football, which will in particular see FIFA invest USD 1 billion in the discipline in the current cycle, “said Fatma Samoura, FIFA Secretary General.

After having carried out inspection visits to all the candidate member associations, FIFA is currently working on the finalization of its evaluation report, which will be published in early June on FIFA.com.

All eligible applications will be presented to the FIFA Council, which will be responsible for designating the host country or countries for the 2023 Women’s World Cup through an open voting procedure, where the outcome of each round of the ballot and the corresponding votes of the members of the Council will be published on FIFA.com. Further details are available in the voting procedure, approved by the FIFA Council Bureau.

While France 2019 has helped raise the standards of women’s football competitions to an unprecedented level, the 2023 edition of the Women’s World Cup also promises to go down in history since it will be the first to bring together 32 teams .

A full overview of the application process is available in the Guide to the application process for the organization of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup ™.
