who are the new unemployed

False step for the occupation in August. The data released by the Institute of Statistics (Istat) show a heavy job reduction with regard to individuals between 15 and 64 years old.

The decline does not only refer to the comparison with the pre-Covid situation (here the collapse takes on truly disheartening dimensions, with beyond 390 thousand workers lost), but also compared to the previous month of July.

In fact, the number of employees in August registered a -0,3% compared to the previous thirty days, a figure probably linked to the reduction of seasonal contracts (who to see the impact of the Citizenship Income).

As often happens, the costs are mainly the ones women, largely occupied with precarious employment which they then had difficulty finding on the job market.

All the data that worry

The cyclical decline in employment is almost completely reflected in the increase ininactivity. The inactive are all those who are considered neither employed nor unemployed, as they do not have a job but do not even look for it (who the Draghi government program to increase employability).

At the same time, the rate of unemployment, evaluated at 9,3%, in line with both the previous month’s results and comparing it to twelve months ago.

A consistent figure with respect to July is also that relating to unemployment youth, which stands at 27,3%. In this case, however, it is possible to record a net decrease compared to 2020, when in the same period of the year the unemployed between the ages of 15 and 24 were 4.9% more.

Overall in August the overall employment rate for those of working age stood at 58,1%, down 0.2 points in comparison with the previous month of July.

The (dramatic) situation of women

And it is precisely among the employed that the first data of worrying disparity between the sexes is highlighted. In fact, if for men the rate of those who work is 67.4%, among women the indicator drops to a worrying one 48,9%, with a decrease of 0.3 points compared to July.

Also in this case, the only way to underline a positive data is to make a comparison with 2020. In fact – in addition to the aforementioned decline in youth unemployment – also for the employed in general it is possible to record an annual increase of 0, 7 points.

But even here the female situation does not seem to be able to boast some form of improvement. This is because, by separating the 162mila more jobs than in August last year (the result of a decline of 131 thousand self-employed, offset by 293 thousand new employees), it is noted that new women employed are less than 30%.
