It’s the 1920s in America. Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (Steve Buscemi) is a politician in Atlantic City at the time of Prohibition. As a politician, he supports the alcohol embargo and is abstinent. But underground, he sells illegally produced and imported alcohol, which he and Atlantic City earn well from. He maintains contacts with Mafia bosses like Al Capone (Stephen Graham) and the Black Community. His brother Eli (Shea Whigham) acts as the city’s sheriff. “Nucky” Thompson can use the time of prohibition to his advantage, because despite the ban, people want to continue to consume alcohol. As a politician he strengthens his position externally with a strict abstinence attitude, internally he has the criminal reins firmly in hand: he has placed his henchmen in important political offices, he cooperates with the New York and Chicago mafia and will soon be in office set up a network in which alcohol is illegally produced or imported. Not only does alcohol continue to flow into Atlantic City, but a lot of money also flows into Thompson’s pocket. He is supported by his chauffeur and foster son James “Jimmy” Darmody (Michael Pitt). But can he really trust him? And his “puppets” also want a piece of the pie soon. And so Thompson is gradually confronted not only with the law and the FBI. The competition grows and does not shrink from murder and extortion. Thompson’s crash appears to be imminent. But he not only has to fear for his life, but also that of Margaret Schroeder (Kelly Macdonald), his love, whom he once protected from her violent husband.
So far, the series has five seasons. The fifth season aired in 2014 and is expected to be the last. Because the storylines of “Boardwalk Empire” were largely completed.
