What is an Endoscopy and When is it Necessary?

A long, thin tube with a tiny camera inside, called an endoscope, is inserted into your body through a natural opening such as your mouth.

Your doctor will usually refer you for an endoscopy if you experience certain symptoms. It will usually be done in an endoscopy unit in a hospital.

There are different types of endoscopes that look at different parts of the body.

The type of endoscopy you have will depend on your symptoms.

Type of endoscope

Find out about:

• colonoscopy: on your lower part to examine your stomach contents

• colposcopy: in your vagina to examine your cervix (opening of your uterus)

• cystoscopy: in your urethra (tube where urine comes out) to examine your bladder

• gastroscopy: in your mouth to examine the esophagus (food pipe), stomach and part of the small intestine

• hysteroscopy: in your vagina to examine your uterus

Because modern endoscopes carry relatively few risks, provide detailed images, and are fast to perform, they have proven to be very useful in many areas of medicine.

Endoscopy useful for investigating many systems in the human body; these areas include:

• Gastrointestinal tract: esophagus, stomach, and duodenum (esophagogastroduodenoscopy), small intestine (enteroscopy), large intestine/colon (colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy), bile duct, rectum (rectoscopy), and anus (anoscopy)

• Respiratory tract: nose (rhinoscopy), lower respiratory tract (bronchoscopy)

• Ears: otoscopy

• Urinary tract: cystoscope

• Female reproductive tract (gynoscopy): Cervix (colposcopy), uterus (hysteroscopy), fallopian tubes (faloposcopy)

• Through small incisions: abdominal or pelvic cavity (laparoscopic), the inside of the joint (arthroscopy), chest organs (thoracoscopy and mediastinoscopy)
