What Are the Advantages of Indonesia Abstaining in the Voting on the Suspension of Russia from the UN Human Rights Council?

Jakarta

RI’s decision to abstain from voting in the United Nations General Assembly (PBB) regarding suspension Russia from the Human Rights Council was deemed appropriate. International Relations expert from Padjadjaran University, Teuku Rezasyah, spoke about the advantages of Indonesia abstaining from voting.

Rezasyah revealed that one of them was opening a dialogue between Indonesia and Russia. He assessed that RI at least did not criticize Russia for alleged human rights violations.

“The decision to abstain allows Indonesia to have a more in-depth dialogue with the Russian government, which is currently in very big trouble. RI’s attitude at least places Indonesia as not to criticize human rights practices that occur in conflict areas,” Rezasyah told reporters on Friday ( 8/4/2022).

“Abstaining also means that Indonesia provides an opportunity for Russia to explain human rights issues that actually occur in the territory of Ukraine, including criticizing the methods of evidence that have been used by the United States and its allies, which are not necessarily objective,” he continued.

Rezasyah also talked about opportunities for dialogue between Indonesia and Russia regarding oil exports to the presence of Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G20 Summit. So that RI is considered to be able to participate in resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

“Furthermore, this abstention will allow Indonesia to have bilateral and in-depth dialogue with Russia, regarding the continuity of oil exports and the payment method, the prospect of Putin’s presence at the G20 in October in Indonesia, as well as efforts that Indonesia can take to help resolve the conflict,” he said.

Rezasyah said that his abstention could prove to the world that Indonesia was consistent in pursuing a free and active policy without any pressure.

“In particular, Abstain has proven to the world that Indonesia is consistent in carrying out its foreign policy freely and actively, without pressure from any country,” he said.

Not Following the US and Allies

Professor of International Relations at the University of Indonesia, Hikmahanto Juwana, also said that RI’s move was the right one. Because Indonesia does not yet know the perpetrators of alleged human rights violations related to the conflict in Ukraine.

Indonesia is in a position not to get verification results related to the existing images and who the perpetrators are,” said Hikmahanto.

He added that this attitude also shows that Indonesia is not following the United States and its allies. Because, according to him, the US and its allies are trying to impose sanctions on Russia by removing it from international organizations and forums.

Indonesia does not follow the US in judging Russia that Russia is wrong. The US and its allies are trying to impose sanctions on Russia for membership in various international organizations and forums, including the G20,” he said.
