Young Cuban was deported from the Dominican Republic after being scammed – 2024-04-27 01:22:27

A young Cuban identified as José Antonio Machado, 27 years old, reported having been deported from the Dominican Republic after being scammed by a woman who posed as a migration worker.

According to the young member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses church, he undertook a trip to that country with the hope of settling legally in the territory, but his plans collapsed because of the scammer.

The Color Visión channel points out that the boy arrived in Santo Domingo on June 24, 2022 and did not want to waste time to begin the necessary procedures to regularize himself in the country.

A friend from his congregation introduced him to María Patnella, a member of the Christian Social Reform Party who offered to help him in this process. The woman presented herself as a supposed official of the General Directorate of Immigration, so she promised to resolve all the procedures she needed.

According to the young man, the scammer showed him screenshots of alleged conversations with other Immigration officials, as well as a letter that Machado appeared to be an employee of a local company.

The young man would have paid about 70,000 Dominican pesos (almost $1,200) for the woman’s services, however, he did not receive any evidence of the procedures that she was supposedly processing.

Disappointed, the young man began a legal process to return his money, but he only managed to recover a fraction of what he invested.

The worst came later, when the woman reported him to the authorities for alleged death threats, which led to the arrest of the young Cuban.

Machado was imprisoned in an Immigration Center on September 20 of last year, where he spent more than four months. At the end of the process, Machado was deported back to Cuba in February, leaving behind his dreams of settling in the Dominican Republic legally.

Now, from the Island, Machado is trying to get the Dominican Republic authorities to know about his case.

On social networks, the young man’s case has begun to become known, with several Internet users taking his side. In that sense, they have warned that the Caribbean country is known for its high levels of corruption, so they wished it luck in resolving its situation.
