Leipzig (dpa/sn) – People in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia were happy about an unusual morning sky on Thursday. Saharan dust colored the sky yellowish-red in many areas. In the course of the day, however, increasing rain will clean the air again and push the dust particles to the ground, said a meteorologist from the German Weather Service in Leipzig on Thursday. The phenomenon will probably no longer be seen in the three federal states on Friday.

The play of colors is caused by ground-level turbulence stirring up enormous amounts of sand in the North African desert. The particles rise up to five kilometers into the atmosphere and can float there for up to six months. In certain weather conditions, the dust is then blown to Central Europe within a few days – especially between March and June and October and November. This happens between five and 15 times a year.
