NEC director Wilco van Schaik will visit Edgar Barreto during his holiday in Italy. The 35-year-old midfielder is transfer-free and interested in returning to Nijmegen.
Van Schaik will visit Genoa later this week to sit down with Barreto. “A super professional with a great past in Nijmegen,” he says in Football International about the Paraguayan, who played for NEC between 2003 and 2007. “He would like to come back with his family. He also has some properties in the Netherlands. We’ll see what comes out together. It only seems nice to me when he comes back and shares his experiences.”
The former player of Sampdoria and Palermo, among others, should transfer that experience to the many young talents in NEC. The Nijmegen residents have emerged in recent years as a breeding ground for good, young footballers. “It’s part of our business model. Training our own players, giving them a future in professional football and benefiting as a club with a good transfer,” says Van Schaik. “We want to be the AZ of the Eerste Divisie.
