“We must ensure Europe’s digital sovereignty”

INTERVIEW – The European Commissioner for the Internal Market, details his ambitions for European space policy.

LE FIGARO. – Germany took over the EU presidency on 1is July. Can we hope that it weighs, so that the Twenty-Seven adopt the Franco-German recovery plan?

Thierry BRETON. – The Chancellor has announced that this is one of her priorities. The agenda will be loaded, with the Brexit negotiations, the “green pact” but also the decisions to be taken in order to ensure EU digital sovereignty. Sovereignty which also depends on our space infrastructures.

You want to give a boost to European space policy. What are your priorities?

Europe, ahead of China, India and Japan, is the second largest space power in the world, behind the United States. Our sovereignty depends on mastery of critical space infrastructures and autonomous access to space. They must be strengthened and accelerated.
