Red wine instead of tap water. This is what happened to residents of the small town of Castelvetro di Modena (Emilia-Romagna) in northern Italy on Wednesday, as local media including Il Resto del Carlino reported on Thursday.

It’s no less than Lambrusco Grasparossa, a typical ruby red wine from the region, which spilled from the taps of this city about 200 kilometers south-east of Milan.
The cause: a technical defect in the pipes of a local vineyard. The wine intended for bottling was thus mistakenly introduced into the main supply of drinking water to the municipality.
The vineyard, Cantina Settevetro, wrote on Facebook that “the incident presented no hygiene or health risks” and apologized for the inconvenience caused by the incident.
The municipality also wanted to reassure on Facebook, stressing that the problem had been resolved quickly. According to the vineyard, it took a little over an hour for everything to get back to normal.
