Referendum on the cutting of the Chambers Suspended the date, we go towards the postponement

After the closure of schools, to arrive today the decision on another hot topic of the moment, the postponement of the referendum confirming the cut of parliamentarians, scheduled for March 29. The Council of Ministers, convened for this morning, has decided to suspend the referendum, having until March 23 to decide the date by which to hold it. Among the most accredited hypotheses that can slip on 17 or 24 May.

Fears about the countryside

The date of March 29 was considered too close, given the health emergency, which would prevent a true information campaign for citizens. The political forces have so far split and many are demanding a technical shift, of a few weeks. Among those opposed to confirming the vote is the Radical Party, which wrote in a note: Voting on March 29 is an attack on civil and political rights of citizens, as configured by article 294 of the penal code. We are facing a violation of citizens’ right to be informed.

The no of Forza Italia

One of the hypotheses is to combine the referendum with the regional elections. Hypothesis rejected by Forza Italia, as Senator Andrea Cangini explains: First they tried to prevent it from taking place, then they tried to silence it, now they try to distort the result. The idea, dear to the 5stelle Movement, of combining the referendum on the cutting of parliamentary representation to the next regional elections is unacceptable: voting only in 5 regions and the result would therefore be distorted at a territorial level.

The political clash

The clash over the referendum has so far been mainly political. Because it was thought that, pending the probable yes to the referendum, which would greatly cut the number of parliamentarians, any acceleration towards the vote would lead to the renewal of Parliament with the old rules. And in that case there would be a higher number of seats, which could be tempting for those who fear not being re-elected in the new smaller rooms. But the spread of the coronavirus is also calling into question these political games and it is currently difficult to imagine a government crisis during a national emergency, which is not expected to be quickly resolved.
