Warren Buffett Donates Record $4.64 Billion in Berkshire Stock to Charities

Warren Buffett, the renowned investor and chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, has made his largest annual donation yet, giving away $4.64 billion worth of Berkshire Hathaway stock to five different charities. This brings his total giving since 2006 to over $51 billion.

The donation, made on June 22, consisted of approximately 13.7 million Class B shares of Berkshire Hathaway. The largest recipient of Buffett’s generosity is the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which received 10.45 million shares, adding to the more than $39 billion of Berkshire stock it has already received.

Buffett also donated 1.05 million shares to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, named after his late first wife, and 2.2 million shares split evenly among charities led by his children Howard, Susan, and Peter. These charities include the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, the Sherwood Foundation, and the NoVo Foundation.

Buffett, who is now 92 years old, has been gradually giving away the majority of his fortune, which he built through his leadership of Berkshire Hathaway since 1965. He and Bill Gates were pioneers of the Giving Pledge, a commitment by wealthy individuals to donate at least half of their wealth to philanthropy. Over 240 people, including Michael Bloomberg, Larry Ellison, Carl Icahn, Elon Musk, and Mark Zuckerberg, have joined the pledge.

Despite his significant donations, Buffett still owns more than $112.5 billion, or 15.1%, of Berkshire Hathaway shares following this latest round of giving. Each year, the number of shares Buffett donates decreases by 5%, but this year’s donation set a record due to the rising stock price of Berkshire Hathaway.

In a statement, Buffett explained that his wealth was the result of “a very long runway, simple and generally sound decisions, the American tailwind, and compounding effects.” He coined the term “American tailwind” in 2019 to describe the United States’ ability to build wealth over the long term, even in times of war and financial crisis.

Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway is a conglomerate with a market value of approximately $740 billion. It includes businesses such as BNSF railroad and Geico car insurance, as well as significant stock holdings in companies like Apple Inc.

The charities receiving Buffett’s donations have specific focuses. The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation works in reproductive health, while the Howard G. Buffett Foundation focuses on alleviating hunger, mitigating conflicts, and improving public safety. The Sherwood Foundation supports nonprofits in Nebraska, and the NoVo Foundation has initiatives centered around girls and women.

Warren Buffett’s philanthropy continues to make a significant impact, and his latest donation further solidifies his commitment to giving back and making a difference in the world.
