Viviana Parisi, the disappearance of Gioele and the death of the DJ: the case from the beginning

on the morning of Monday 3 August. Viviana Parisi, 43-year-old deejay, leaves his home in Venetico, a small town near Messina, with his son Gioele Mondello, 4 years. Her husband, Daniele Mondello, Gioele’s father, also a DJ and is at work when his wife leaves. She told him that she will go to Milazzo, about twenty kilometers away, to a shopping center to buy shoes for the boy. Before leaving, Viviana prepares the tomato sauce for lunch. Leave your cell phone at home.

The accident in Caronia

In the late morning, Viviana’s Opel Corsa collides with a van in a tunnel (Pizzo Turda) of the Palermo-Messina motorway at the height of Caronia, 104 kilometers from Venetico towards Palermo. There is immediately talk of a slight accident. The car will have a puncture in one tire. The two workers in the van take care to slow down the traffic in the tunnel while Viviana’s car proceeds to the tunnel exit and stops in a rest area. Several passing motorists notice it. These are the last moments in which Viviana Parisi will be seen alive.

The disappearance of Viviana Parisi and Gioele Mondello

A few seconds after the accident, the woman disappears, climbs over a guard rail and vanishes into the countryside and scrubland near the highway. Leave the bag in the car, with money and documents inside. The workers see her from behind in the distance but do not notice the child. Only one family from Northern Italy sees Gioele. The northerners tell it to other witnesses who call 112. Then for the northern family it goes and disappears: for days those super witnesses will be searched far and wide for Italy.

The searches

From Monday, August 3, searches begin in the surrounding area. Dozens of people are busy, every ravine is sifted through the dense vegetation. Days go by without success. Viviana’s husband throws a heartbreaking appeal to his wife in a video posted on Facebook, begs her to go home. The path of voluntary removal is beginning to be favored. On the morning of August 8 in an interview Patti’s prosecutor Angelo Cavallo says so openly and adds that it is now considered less likely that the woman and the child are dead and are in the area.

The discovery of the body of Viviana Parisi

The same afternoon, a corpse of a woman he is found in the bush about a kilometer from the accident site. Saturday 8 August, it is around 3 pm when one of the molecular dogs sniffs the body. The unrecognizable corpse is located near a high voltage pylon. But the clothes are those of Viviana. In particular, his white tennis shoes are immediately recognized. Then there is also a chain and finally the wedding ring. In the evening, Patti’s prosecutor said that it is believed with relative certainty that it’s about her. There is no trace of Joel.

The Depression

What happened to Viviana and her baby? Little by little, details about the woman’s private life are emerging in those days. No particular family problems emerge but relatives tell of a period of psychological distress during the lockdown. Viviana also ended up in the hospital. He was sick, then better but alternating between quiet days and days of discomfort. Immediately, the investigators take into consideration the murder-suicide hypothesis but do not rule out other theories, such as that of an accident or an unfortunate encounter.

The pyramid

Where was Viviana going so far from home? Family members reconstruct: in the days preceding the disappearance, Viviana had asked for news on the Pyramid of light, an artistic installation located in Motta d’Affermo, linked to rites of rebirth. The mystical charm of the place would have captivated her, in those weeks when the woman had begun to read the Bible every day. The pyramid is about twenty kilometers from the accident site. Relatives believe that was his goal. Why hadn’t she told her husband? Maybe because she wanted to be alone (she had written thoughts about loneliness she shared on Facebook). And why was he with Joel then? Because she never separated from her, for any reason, says those who knew her well.

The body and the autopsy

An autopsy is carried out on the woman’s body. The first findings analyzed by the forensic entomologist Stefano Vanin speak of multiple fractures, compatible with a fall from a height. Viviana may have fallen from the trellis. Suicide or accident? No one knows yet. On the body there are signs of animal bites. Perhaps wild animals living in the bush. The presence in the area of two large dogs induces the investigators to hear the owner of the animals. a track that is not excluded but that investigators do not favor.

In Sant’Agata di Militello

Trying to reconstruct Viviana’s journey, a detail immediately emerges: a twenty-minute gap. Opel exits at Sant’Agata di Militello (Viviana does not pay) and then returns. What did the woman do there? Have you met anyone? Could he have entrusted the little one to a third party? This is also thought of, since the child is not found and there are not even the only witnesses who saw him go away with his mother after the accident. Several days after the disappearance, videos are captured.

The video of Viviana and Gioele in the car

Viviana refueled in Sant’Agata. And Joel was alive. This is clearly seen in the camera images that the investigators found in Sant’Agata. There is more than one video of the mother and the baby. So he was alive at least up to that point, ten minutes before the accident. Could he have died in the collision? We also think of this but a marginal hypothesis. There are no traces of blood in the car. And the reaction of the woman, who disappears with him immediately after the collision would be completely inexplicable if the baby had died. The family wants to investigate the dynamics of the accident.

Fear of social services

But then why did Viviana run away? The family’s lawyer reveals a detail unknown until then to Corriere della Sera: the woman was afraid that the social services would take her child away. Could this fear have prompted her to flee the accident scene? Not to be excluded. That’s why her husband in the appeal had told her to be quiet because nothing would happen to her. But why should they take Joel away from their mother who was so attached and devoted to him? Viviana’s fear arises during the lockdown. When anxiety and depression put her in the hospital. They prescribe therapy for her. But she shows reluctance to heal herself. And there in his soul, tried by malaise, the worm of fear starts: if he does not heal, he will risk losing his son.

Witnesses to the accident

On Sunday 16 August, thirteen days after his disappearance, an important turning point comes in the investigation. The Lombard family who had seen the child with his mother after the accident on the highway shows up. The super-witnesses confirm their story to the police: Joel was alive, in his mother’s arms, his eyes were open and he was not injured. Viviana with a protective attitude towards the little one left with him in a country lane after having climbed over the guard rail and having crossed the highway going into the other lane. He announces it atAnsa the prosecutor of Patti, who adds: no one was following them. Meanwhile, research continues, day after day. The prosecutor seems to be more directed towards the murder-suicide trail, while not excluding other hypotheses. But there is still no trace of Joel, fifteen days after his disappearance.
