Virginia Hill and Hans Hauser: Hans Hauser was my great-uncle

The mysterious deaths of Virginia and Hans Hauser remain puzzles and arouse emotions to this day.

GAISBERG. The story couldn’t be better invented by a writer: You, Virginia Hill-Hauser, a Mafia bride with a colorful past. He, Hans Hauser, ski instructor and a schiidol of his era from the Zistelalm on the Gaisberg. We spoke to Michael Hauser, the host of the Hotel Restaurant Zistelalm, about the crime story “Virginia”, which has become part of the family history of this Salzburg family.

District Gazette: Mr. Hauser, you were less than a month old when Virginia Hill died. Did you know Hans Hauser?

Michael Hauser: As an eight-year-old you can’t really talk about knowing. He was my great-uncle, my grandfather’s brother. I can remember that he introduced him to me. Hans was just as tall as my grandfather. Both were over six feet. That made a big impression on me as a boy. Hans was even five foot four. You just picked up a lot within the family in the later years.

The family wasn’t exactly enthusiastic about Mrs. Hill, were they?

At that time, a lot of emotions played a role. Hans was everyone’s favorite, including my great-grandmother’s. Hans was the love and Max was the ordinary. In addition, Hans was one of the best skiers at the time. Twenty years after his successes, he still had a household name. Then he came with Virginia and they said: “What kind of girl is that now?” She was known to us as a gangster bride. Hans was poor because she left him behind at times and just ran off to do some kind of job. She was then picked up and disappeared for a few months. There are still family members who do not want to hear about this matter. I’m rather at ease with the whole story. Therefore, I do not enter this story with tremendous emotion. It’s a story of this house. That just can’t be talked about. That’s just family history. It’s an exciting story that interests me as well as others.

The trail leads to Switzerland?

The Swiss thing. Something funny happened to me years ago during my gastro season: I worked in Klosters near Davos in the Hotel Chesa Grischuna. The old lady asked me if I was related to Virginia Hauser. Then she told me that here in the house, Virginia had held parties again and again when they were in Switzerland. It has not been forgotten there until today.
