Viral Video Police Silent When Church-Church Fights Are Burned in Medan, Here Are the Facts

Field

The video accompanied by a narration says that the Belawan Police Chief Commissioner Daniel Naibaho did not act when a brawl broke out between residents, causing the church to be burned in Belawan, Field, viral. The Head of Public Relations of the North Sumatra Police, Kombes Hadi Wahyudi, explained about the video.

View detik.com, Thursday (22/7/2021), in the 4 minute 18 second video, it appears that Daniel is around the location of the brawl. The video was uploaded by a Facebook account named Maya Simanjuntak.

“Why are you standing here? Why are you standing alone? What are you doing? This is the police chief. My photo is a photo…. I am a lawyer for the Tampubulon Poltak.

“Who is standing, sir?” Reply to the police chief Belawan.

“Yes, this is the proof. It’s a church that was set on fire,” said the video recorder.

“I was ahead earlier. I was hit too,” said Daniel.

“Father already got attacked, why didn’t you act?” shouted another voice of the crowd.

“Mr. Kapolsek just stood there, no action was taken. I ordered the Chief of Police to take action against the police who did not take a stand to assert justice,” said the video recorder.

Police are seen still observing the location of the brawl. The crowd shouted that they were ready to support the police in breaking up the brawl.

North Sumatra Police Explanation

The Head of Public Relations of the North Sumatra Police, Kombes Hadi, said that the Belawan Police Chief did not take any action. He said Daniel at that time had measured the ability of his members not to be comparable to the residents who were fighting.

“The position of the Chief of Police is to come to the TKP with only a few people. Yes, it is not wrong that the residents demand that the Kapolsek act. But the police must also measure the level of personnel’s ability as well. Don’t let us, instead of narrowing the space, widen the space. Because of the strength of our personnel, less,” said Hadi.

Hadi said Daniel came with a number of personnel with the intention of breaking up the commotion. Apparently, when they arrived at the location, the brawl involved many people.

“That may not be understood by the public. But what is clear is that the Kapolsek with several members who came have actually tried to intervene. It’s just that when he arrived, the amount of strength was not proportional to the number of people involved in the brawl,” he said.

He said Daniel asked the Police and TNI for help to disperse the crowd. Once additional personnel arrive, the mob can be disbanded.

“But after that, they asked for help from the Police, to Brimob, to the TNI Belawan. After a large number of troops arrived, the situation was under control,” he said.

“Indeed, the initial condition was that the police had a small number, the name was ridiculous. Even if the people’s demands were excessive for us, they did not see the number of police,” continued Hadi.

Hadi emphasized that Daniel had acted responsively by directly coming to the location of the brawl in the early hours of the morning. Daniel, he said, came to the scene after receiving the residents’ reports.

“He has taken responsive action. Regarding him coming to the scene and then he saw his own strength with the number of personnel and the large number of people, it was the right calculation,” he said.

Hadi also regretted the video recorder which sounded very provocative. Hadi praised Daniel and his staff for not being easily provoked.

“He has provoked, we can look into it. By provoking like that and the Police Chief is still calm he does not react to the provocation of the person who made the video. The police chief is still holding back.

In addition, Hadi emphasized that no church was burned, like the narration conveyed by the video recorder. He also emphasized that the provocateurs of the brawl had been arrested and the other perpetrators were being hunted.

“There is no SARA element at all. There is no religious element at all, no church is burned at all. That is between youths,” he said.

The brawls between youths are said to have happened repeatedly. Hadi said six people suspected of being the provocateurs had been arrested.
