Viral Giant Alligator Relaxing on the Golf Course

Florida

American Alligator is alligator native to the United States and common in the Florida area. But it’s rare to see giant alligators walking the golf course so it becomes viral on social media.

Seen in the viral photo, a very large looking alligator is in the grass. The image was taken by resident Rich Louty at the Sebring golf course in Florida.

“Welcome to Florida, home to Jurassic Park,” Devitt wrote on Facebook, as quoted detikINET from Fox News, Friday (24/2/2023).

Its size is unclear but the longest alligator recorded in Florida measured about 4.3 meters and weighed 470 kilograms. Seeing its form, it seems that the size of the alligator is not far from that.

Adult alligators eat a wide variety of animals including fish, snakes, small mammals, turtles and birds, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Devitt’s post alone garnered around 2,000 comments from locals and outsiders who were impressed by the sheer size of the reptile in the photo. “I’ve lived in Florida my whole life. That’s the biggest alligator I’ve ever seen,” one comment read.

“I love sunny Florida, but people like this keep me from living there.” wrote another.

“We’ve lived in Florida since 89. The biggest alligator I’ve ever seen was in a canal near a boat ramp about 20 years ago. He was a bit bigger than this. We turned the boat around and went the other way,” another netizen said.

Alligator conservation is a success story in Florida. The state’s alligator population is estimated at 1.3 million of various sizes and numbers have remained stable over the years.

Conservation status alligator America is Least Concern alias safe by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Historically, hunting has decimated their populations, and was once listed as an endangered species by the Endangered Species Act of 1973.
