Impending Iceland Volcanic Eruption: Experts Warn of Imminent Threat

A volcanic eruption in Iceland is expected in the coming days.

Seismic activity and underground lava flows intensified on the Reykjanes Peninsula near the capital Reykjavik over the weekend. Met Office researchers and other scientists have been warning that the days are counting for an eruption. volcano inevitable and likely to happen soon.

About it writes Live Science.

The future volcanic eruption did not come as a surprise to researchers: since the end of October, they have already recorded about 30,000 tremors, and some of them fell in a seismic swarm of several thousand tremors in a short time.

On November 10, local authorities decided to evacuate the town of Grindovik with a population of about 4,000 people.

The Iceland volcanic eruption is actually only part of a 1,000-year cycle of volcanic activity: Iceland is likely to experience more volcanic eruptions in the next 500 years. This is also evidenced by the 15-kilometer magma tunnel running under Sundnukur and Grindovik, which is also part of this thousand-year cycle.

According to Edward Marshall, a researcher at the Northern Volcanology Center at the University of Iceland, “time is up” and now all humanity can do is prepare for several hundred more years of eruptions on Reykjanes.

According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO), a large magma tunnel with a length of 15 km has formed under the surface of the earth between Sundnukur in the north and Grindovik. Scientists have found that the magma in this tunnel is likely rising to the surface, so there is a high risk of it breaking out. The data also suggests that the largest accumulation of magma today is recorded near Sundnukur, about 3.5 kilometers from Grindavik.

Geological evidence suggests that periods of volcanic inactivity here last from 600 to 1,200 years, followed by bursts of eruptions lasting from 200 to 500 years.

Let us remind you that on November 11, a state of emergency was declared in Iceland due to the risk of a volcanic eruption. The civil protection agency called on the population of the southwestern town of Grindovik to evacuate due to the threat of a volcanic eruption.

Fears that molten rock could reach the surface within days have prompted authorities to begin building protective walls around the geothermal power plant.
