Chinese government media, Global Times, reporting the zoo manager’s behavior came to light after video recorded by visitors showed the dog lying in a cage with a nameplate reading an African lion.

One social media user shared a video of the dog disguised as an African lion and compared it to a similar incident at another zoo in China.
“I remember a dog having replaced a wolf in another Chinese zoo,” wrote one Sina Weibo user.
After being caught disguising the dog as an African lion, supposedly to attract visitors, the zoo in Xichang argued that this was a mistake. They blame the lack of time to change the markings on the animal’s enclosure.
“The cage used to be for African lions, but now it has been re-designated as a cage for golden retrievers,” said a zoo employee. Global Times, Tuesday (6/4/2021).
The dog, disguised as an African lion, is known to belong to the zoo owner.

State media further reported that a similar incident had occurred in Xianning, Hubei Province, in early March. Back then, a dog was used to replace a wolf.
Internet users joked that zoo operators should have used huskies, as it was more difficult to tell them apart from real wolves.
