Nine people were killed this week in fighting in the Palestinian refugee camp Ain Al-Hilweh in southern Lebanon, news channel Al Jazeera reported.

An armed conflict between the secular Fatah movement and Islamic militant groups has been raging in the camp on the outskirts of the city of Sidon since the end of July. A total of 29 people have been killed and more than 200 injured since the fighting began. Dozens of families have fled.

The violence intensified when a senior Fatah soldier was liquidated by a group of armed men. Since then, the warring parties have violated a truce several times.

Ain Al-Hilweh has an estimated population of 100,000 and is the largest Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon. According to agreements, the Palestinians in Lebanon have full control over the camps in which they live. The Lebanese army or police do not enter.
