And the countdown that we met. The SN9 lifted off safely and climbed up to 10km above the sky. At this point, the rocket engine was stopped and the attitude was changed horizontally. Now enter fall mode. The image of a silver object that is steadily lowering in altitude from directly below is quite impressive.
And when it’s about to fill the screen, the SN9 reignites the Raptor engine and tries to return it to its vertical position. However, the momentum of the fall did not stop, probably because something went wrong, and the SN9 smashed into the ground with a roaring sound and exploded, which was an exciting ending.
As with the last SN8, SpaceX didn’t expect the SN9 to land 100% well. Even at the time of the development of Falcon 9, where it is now possible to recover boosters, SpaceX has repeatedly crashed rockets into the ground and dropped them into the sea.
This is a method of making the defects manifest at an early stage and, as a result, accelerating the development by adopting a development system that incorporates failures. In the case of Starship as well, we adopted a rapid prototyping method that assembles multiple development versions in parallel, and by breaking them, further accelerate development, and SpaceX will one day fly over 100 people with this huge rocket and spacecraft. We want to be able to send a pilot or a large amount of luggage into orbit, and even to the moon and Mars at once.
