Chandigarh: A student was arrested for recording private footage from the Chandigarh University Women’s Hostel and for spreading it through social media. The student was arrested in the same hostel. Police said the girl was interrogated. According to the police, the girl’s arrest was recorded after the preliminary investigation.
Mohali’s girlfriend was reportedly arrested. The girl secretly captured footage of about 60 college girls taking a bath. The girl sent the footage to her friend Shimla and the video went viral on social media.
Mohali police and the cybercrime branch have filed a case and are investigating reports that footage was captured by the hostel. Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains tweeted that the criminals involved in the incident will not get away and asked Chandigarh University students to exercise restraint.
After the footage came out, police dismissed charges that a student attempted to commit suicide. Mohali police said one of the students who protested the university management asking for action in the incident collapsed and the claims to the contrary are unfounded. Police said investigations are ongoing and news coming out of social media shouldn’t be believed.
The university management denied the news that the students attempted suicide. Authorities said one of the students lost consciousness during the protest and the boy was rushed to hospital. Late yesterday, students protested in large numbers demanding immediate action in the incident in which the footage was broadcast.
