Verona, the newborns who died of the killer bacterium: 3 doctors from the hospital suspended

The Management of the Integrated University Hospital of Verona announces that following the findings of the report of the Regional Inspection Commission in relation to the Citrobacter affair of the Women’s and Child Hospital of Borgo Trento, starting from Saturday 5 September 2020, they are suspended in via to prevent three doctors according to precautionary conditions: the text of the note released late Sunday evening by the hospital of the Venetian city. The birth point was closed on June 12, in the structure four babies died in two years (Leonardo at the end of 2018, Nina in November 2019, Tommaso in March of this year and Alice on last August 16), while 9 others reported permanent brain damage. In all, 96 children affected by the bacterium in the hospital.

The expert report

According to what emerged from the investigation of the commission of experts appointed by the Directorate General of Health of Veneto, the bacterium was nested in the sink tap used by the staff of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to take water to be given to newborns along with milk. The citrobacter, experts say, would have arrived there from the outside, probably due to the failure or partial compliance with the strict hygiene measures imposed on staff in high-risk departments, such as frequent hand washing, changing gloves at every change of patient or function, the use of overshoes, overshoes, shoes and masks. The suspended doctors are Dr. Chiara Bovo, Health Director of the Verona hospital; Dr. Giovanna Ghirlanda, Medical Director of the facility and Dr. Paolo Biban, Director of Pediatrics. The birth point, after the sanitization of the entire structure, was reopened on September 1st. The prosecutor is investigating the matter.
