‘Van Dissel: Regional measures needed if infections continue to rise’ | NOW

Regional measures are needed if the number of new corona infections continues to rise in large cities. Jaap van Dissel, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Control of the RIVM, warns about this in an interview with the AD.

“There are various clusters around students. They are starting their academic year again, building up many contacts. But that is not possible right now,” says Van Dissel. As a solution, he suggests that student societies and catering establishments close earlier in the evening. “Limiting the number of social contacts, such measures will have an effect.”

Van Dissel does not anticipate a national lockdown. “Why should Drenthe participate in a measure that is necessary in the Randstad? You want to prevent that. In the spring we had to fight the medical crisis with a hammer blow, that is different now.”

Incidentally, Van Dissel does not only blame students for the rapid increase in infections. “Our behavioral research shows that nine out of ten people with complaints still go outside. That is simply risky.”
