“He lived and worked on the Mir orbital station for 437 days, an all-time record for the length of time spent in space during a flight,” added Roskosmos.

Polyakov undertook two space missions. He spent a total of 678 days in Earth orbit. The trained doctor first traveled to space in late August 1988, when he remained aboard the Mir space station until April 1989.

Less than five years later, he went there again, returning after 437 days.

During the expedition, Polyakov devoted himself to an extensive program of monitoring the health of himself and his crewmates. According to Roskosmos, the research of him helped prove that the human body is ready to travel not only in the Earth’s orbit, but also in the deepest space.
