Vaccines, a duel over numbers. “450,000 doses are coming every week” – Corriere.it

Ursula von der Leyen, president of the EU Commission, has guaranteed it: the European Union will have sufficient vaccine doses for all member states. And il Vax day yesterday it started with doses distributed in proportion to the population of all Member States.

Symbolic doses, those of yesterday: Italy had 9,750 vaccines for the start, against the circa 11 thousand of Germany. “The 150 thousand doses of vaccines that have been delivered to you are part of the subsequent supplies that will arrive in our country starting from December 28”, the extraordinary commissioner Domenico Arcuri wanted to specify yesterday after figures and percentages had been chasing each other throughout the day which seemed to penalize Italy in the distribution of the vaccine.

“There has been no discrimination against Italy,” Arcuri points out. And he adds: «The assignment of doses was made at a European level, both for Vax day and for subsequent supplies. Our plan is to have 450,000 doses per week starting tomorrow, which will arrive directly in the places of administration “.

In other European countries, the doses of vaccines will arrive in proportion to the population. The Ministry of Health also specifies in a note: “Contracts with vaccine manufacturers are stipulated directly by the European Commission on behalf of all member countries”.

«Each country receives the percentage share of doses due in proportion to the population according to Eurostat estimates. 13.46 for each supply is destined for Italy».

And here are some examples of what is happening in other European countries. There Spain received a first shipment of 350,000 doses of the vaccine (with 47 million inhabitants), for the Denmark the first shipment is 40,000 doses (6 million inhabitants); for the Portugal the first load is 80,000 doses (with just over ten million inhabitants).

L’Netherlands is one of the rare voices out of the chorus. The first shipment of 10 thousand vaccines Pfizer arrived this weekend, with a population of just under 7 million, but the national vaccination campaign won’t start until January 8.

The European Vax day started when in the world 4 million people had already been vaccinated. A good 800,000 in Great Britain which – now released from the European Union also with an official treaty – began the vaccine campaign on its behalf as early as 9 December, with an average of over 40,000 vaccinations per day. Over a million vaccinations in the United States, 700,000 in Russia where they adopted their Sputnik vaccine.

Yesterday Vax Day in Europe, with aanother exception: Viktor Orbán’s Hungary he wanted to start administering the doses early, starting on Boxing Day. As happened in Slovakia where the first to receive the vaccine was a member of the government commission against the pandemic, Vladimir Krcmery.

An excellent vaccination also in Germany: the Land of Saxony-Anhalt burned the time by vaccinating a 101-year-old woman, Edith Kwoizalla, resident in a senior center in Halbertsadt, on Saturday.

Anchand in France they decided to start with residences for the elderly, like this like l’Austria where the first three doses of vaccines were administered in Vienna to three women and two men over 80: before Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, the first ever was Theresia Hofer, 84.
