Use of social media is still growing in the Netherlands NOW

The use of social media among Dutch people continues to grow, according to research by research agency Newcom on Saturday. On average, Dutch people spend an hour and a half on social media.

With 12.1 million users, WhatsApp remains the most popular among Dutch people. Instagram shows the largest increase: 4.9 million Dutch people used the platform in 2019, 5.6 million a year later.

YouTube is also increasing in popularity. The number of users of the video platform increased from 4.9 million to 5.6 million in one year.

What is striking about the research is that shrinking trust in social media does not by definition lead to people saying goodbye to it. For example, the number of Facebook users is on the rise again, while a previous study by Newcom showed that a large number of people had stopped due to the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Seven thousand Dutch people aged 15 and over were interviewed for the study.
