Passengers suspected of infection would have to be taken to a medical facility “immediately”. Five other cities in the province of Hubei were also closed off from the outside world on Saturday.

According to local authorities, public transport has been suspended in five cities and access to the highways has been blocked. A total of 18 cities have now been isolated in the fight against the spread of the novel virus. In fact, 56 million people are quarantined.

Hubei is also home to the 11 million metropolis Wuhan, from which the virus started and which was the first Chinese city to be quarantined because of the 2019 nCoV pathogen.

According to the authorities, there are now almost 1300 confirmed cases of infection nationwide, 41 patients died. Individual cases have also been reported from other countries, including Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam and the USA.

Three patients in quarantine in France

The virus has now reached Europe for the first time. Three suspected cases were confirmed in France on Friday. Three patients are currently in quarantine in hospital in France, the French Ministry of Health said.

One case occurred in Bordeaux, the other two lung diseases were diagnosed in Paris. All patients had previously been in China, it said. Anyone who was in close contact with the three infected should be checked.

The government will do everything possible to curb the spread of the pathogen, said Health Minister Agnès Buzyn. “We have to treat an epidemic like a conflagration.”
