USA after Floyd: curfew extended in New York

New York extends curfew until Sunday for riots

The night curfew in New York is extended – and tightened. Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Tuesday that there was a curfew until 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Sunday. Only members of systemically relevant professions are allowed to leave their homes. Looting continued in the center of the US metropolis on Monday evening. Several groups of young people moved through Manhattan and attacked shops.

On Monday, the curfew did not take effect until 11 p.m. US President Donald Trump criticizes this. It was “no wonder” that the protesters “took apart” the city center, he wrote on Twitter. Trump called on New York officials to deploy the National Guard to curb the riots.

Criticism also comes from the governor of the US state of New York, Andrew Cuomo, like de Blasio, a member of the Democratic Party. De Blasio has rejected support from the National Guard, Cuomo said. He demanded that the New York police force deploy more of its 38,000 people to prevent looting and vandalism. Cuomo also criticized Trump’s handling of the protests. The president shoots himself at the looters so he doesn’t have to talk about Floyd’s killing.
