US-UN Sanctions for Taliban Leaders in Afghanistan Cabinet

Taliban be in the spotlight when announcing the interim government Afghanistan on Tuesday (7/9), partly because a number of the figures appointed were targets of sanctions by the United States and the United Nations.

The filling positions in the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, which are included in the US and UN sanctions list, have held various positions, ranging from prime minister to defense minister.

At the top of the government, there are also several names that have been on the wanted list of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The FBI even set a high reward for those who can provide information about the whereabouts of the Taliban officials.

In addition, a number of other officials had also served as prisoners in the special terrorism prison established by the US at Guantanamo.

Mohammad Hassan Akhund (Prime Minister)

The Taliban attracted public attention for appointing Akhund as acting prime minister in this interim government.

When the Taliban first came to power in Afghanistan in 1996-2001, he was the head of the Rehbari Syura council. Akhund also held the position of foreign minister and deputy prime minister.

Today, Akhund is still under UN sanctions for his role in the past Taliban rule in Afghanistan.

Sirajuddin Haqqani (Minister of Home Affairs)

Sirajuddin is the leader of the well-respected Haqqani network in Afghanistan. The figure who was appointed interior minister is also one of the deputy leaders of the Taliban group since 2016.

Sirajuddin’s name is on the FBI’s most wanted list. The US investigation agency even offered a reward of US$10 million or equivalent to Rp142.6 billion for those who could provide information about Sirajuddin’s whereabouts.

Khalil Haqqani (Minister of Refugee Affairs)

Uncle Sirajuddin is also a target for the FBI because of his ties to the Al-Qaeda group. The FBI is offering a $5 million reward for those who provide information about Khalil.
