The United States has been the country with the most confirmed coronavirus infection cases since Thursday.
According to figures from the prestigious Johns Hopkins University, 82,404 Americans have officially been infected with the virus since the outbreak.
The US thus passes China as the country with the highest infection rate. In China, the country where the virus outbreak started in late November, the number of infections is on Thursday at 81,782.
The number of infections in the US has increased explosively, especially in recent days. In a week, more than 55,000 infections were added, of which more than 14,000 in the past 24 hours.
Italy, with 80,589 confirmed infections, the worst affected European country, is still by far the country with the most coronavirus deaths, at 8,215. In the US, according to official figures, “only” 1,178 people have died as a result.
The coronavirus in short
- The coronavirus mainly spreads from person to person via sneezing and cough drops. The chance of becoming infected through surfaces such as door handles is small. This chance decreases if you wash your hands often.
- You can considerably reduce the chance of spreading by keeping at least 1.5 meters away from others.
- An infected person infects two to three others on average. Precautions are necessary to contain this.
- The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
- Almost all deaths involve the elderly or other vulnerable persons, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
