Second day of the presentation of corona apps: you should know this NOW

On Sunday, the seven companies and organizations that have penetrated the pre-selection of a second day corona app will present their ideas to the public. The program lasts from 10 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. and can be followed live via NU.nl. This is what you need to know.

Corona apps?

Minister Hugo de Jonge (Public Health) announced on April 7 that the cabinet wants to use apps in the fight against the corona virus. On Friday, it was announced that seven companies and organizations are among the preselections. They present their ideas to the public on Saturday and Sunday, who can give feedback.

The entire Sunday program can be followed via NU.nl and on YouTube.

The program of Sunday April 19:

  • 10.00 – 10.15 am: Opening
  • 10.15 – 13.00: Presentation and demonstration of the apps
  • 13:00 – 16:00: Break
  • 4 – 5.30 pm: Final presentations

What is the purpose of the presentations?

The seven parties received criticism on Saturday, which they were able to process during the night. On Sunday they will be able to demonstrate again why their app can be useful in the fight against the corona virus, that the app meets the conditions and that they have listened to the feedback.

The idea is that scientists, experts and citizens can view the apps and ask questions. The use of an app by a government can be drastic. In this way, the government wants to respond to concerns in this area.

Is that enough?

Not according to some critics. A number of organizations and experts believe that the process is going too fast. There are two weeks between when De Jonge announced that the government wants to use apps and next Tuesday – when the decision about it will be announced.

On Friday, a number of experts from the Safe Against Corona coalition announced that they would distance themselves from the pre-selection. This group advised the ministry together with the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) and the GGD about the conditions that an app should meet, but did not see this reflected in the selected apps.

Will there be an app anyway?

That is not yet certain. In theory, it can be concluded from each of the seven apps after this weekend that it does not meet the conditions. The Dutch Data Protection Authority also keeps an eye on things. The supervisor will announce on Monday whether the apps comply with privacy legislation.

Minister De Jonge will announce on Tuesday whether the cabinet will use an app. Then it will also be known how long it takes before the app is offered. Installing the app is not mandatory, Prime Minister Mark Rutte said on Friday.
