Peskov said the actions of the American politicians were another case of US interference in the affairs of other countries.
“We consider such an initiative of members of Congress unacceptable. We consider this to be interference in our affairs. And we believe that only the Russian people can determine who will become president of the Russian Federation and when,” Peskov added, as reported by the press. Reuters.
Previously, two members of the US Congress had introduced resolutions to end Washington’s recognition of Vladimir Putin as Russia’s president if he remained in power beyond 2024.
“Congressman Steve Cohen, Deputy Chair of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, better known as the Helsinki Commission, together with Rank Member Joe Wilson of South Carolina, today introduced a Congressional Resolution to end Vladimir Putin’s recognition as president of Russia after 7 May 2024, if autocrats remain in power,” Cohen’s office said in a press release Thursday.
The resolution, the press release continued, claiming irregularities in Russia’s elections had kept Putin in power and his continuation in office beyond 2024 was illegitimate.
