Held military drills near Taiwan, China sends ‘serious warning’ to US

BEIJING – China recently did a series military training near Taiwan to show to United States of America (US) his determination regarding the self-governing island. This was revealed by a Chinese military spokesman.

Military command spokesman Colonel Shi Yi said the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Eastern Theater Command held combat readiness drills and other training operations in the sea and airspace around Taiwan.

He said the exercise was a “serious warning” to the US on the issue of Taiwan’s proposed independence.

“Chinese troops are determined and capable of thwarting any interference by external forces and attempts at separatism in Taiwan,” the official added as quoted by Russia Today, Wednesday (25/5/2022).

For your information, both Washington and Beijing regularly carry out military missions near Taiwan.

The island was the last bastion of nationalist forces during the Chinese Civil War, and has had a self-rule that has not responded to Beijing since. Meanwhile, the Chinese government considers Taiwan to be under its sovereignty.

The US had supported the island’s autonomy but adopted a stance of ‘strategic ambiguity’ as part of its rapprochement with Beijing in the 1970s. For decades, Washington has committed to helping Taiwan defend against a hypothetical attack, but has not explicitly pledged to use its own military to do so.
