Update on the New Immunization Campaign Against RSV and Flu in Castilla y León: 84% Coverage Achieved in Zamora

The new immunization campaign against the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) launched this year by the Government of Castilla y León reflects in the balance of its first month a total of 389 children in Zamora who have received the dose of the nirsevimab antibody, which which means 84% coverage of those born from March 1 of this year to November 3.

In Castilla y León, the administration of a single dose of nirsevimab during the 2023-2024 campaign is included in the lifelong immunization schedule for children born between March 1, 2023 and March 31, 2024. The Directorate General Public Health has acquired a total of 13,000 doses to cover the needs until that date.

Depending on the time of birth, the administration is carried out in the hospital or health center, as follows: those born on or after October 1 receive the monoclonal antibody in the hospital after delivery; For those born between the months of March and September, a specific campaign has been carried out at the beginning of the virus season, administering the dose at the health center or the usual vaccination center.

Regarding the flu, in Zamora 43.5% coverage has been reached in the first month of the campaign in those over 60 years of age. While, in children under two years of age, coverage is 23.5% and, among children from 2 to 4, 22.7%.

It is worth highlighting, as a novelty in this campaign, the vaccination in the child population between 6-59 months of age. These minors are receiving, depending on their age, two types of vaccine: children between 6 and 23 months receive the quadrivalent inactivated vaccine intramuscularly, as the attenuated intranasal vaccine, which is the intended for those between 24 and 59 months.

Referring to the coronavirus in the province, 25,981 people have already received the dose with a coverage of 35.4% in those over 60 years of age. The General Directorate of Public Health encourages everyone who has it indicated – the most vulnerable population or those with previous pathologies – to get vaccinated against flu or COVID before the corresponding epidemics occur.
