Questioning the Use of Chloroquine for the Treatment of Covid-19 Patients

TEMPO.CO, JakartaSigit Purwanto was nervous when he learned that the swab test results showed he was infected with the corona virus in mid-July. Together with 46 health workers, nurses from the Pundong District Public Health Center, Bantul, Yogyakarta, he underwent a swab test because he often had contact with patients and was at risk of being exposed to the virus. Only he was the one who tested positive Covid-19.

Sigit has no symptoms such as cough and runny nose. He was finally put in an isolation room in a special ward at the Panembahan Senopati Regional General Hospital, Bantul. “My wife is stressed and crying. In an atmosphere of fear, I try hard to calm down,” he said, Tuesday, August 11, 2020.

This 43-year-old man received special care from a pulmonary and heart specialist because he had a history of heart rhythm disorders or arrhythmias. The doctor stated that there was an infection in Sigit’s lungs.

This history of arrhythmias made the doctor treating Sigit not give him medicine Chloroquine or chloroquine. This drug is used as one of a number of experimental treatments to treat Covid-19 as long as the actual vaccine and drug are not yet available. The problem is that chloroquin has serious side effects on the heart.

The United States Food and Drug Administration or FDA revoked the permit for emergency use of chloroquine to treat Covid patients on June 15. The FDA assesses the drug does not cure patients infected with Covid.

Brazil stopped using the drug after several patients developed potentially fatal heart complications. Some patients taking high doses of this medicine experience irregular heartbeats.

For ten days in isolation in the hospital, Sigit was diligently taking vitamin C, antivirals and antibiotics. He got a great supply of fruit from his family. Eat nutritious food, drink milk regularly, and green beans.
