In a garage on the Pieter Calandlaan in Nieuw-West where two men became unwell last night, there is no drug lab but a cannabis nursery. The police suspected that the two had come into contact with chemicals and therefore first thought of a drug lab. It is yet to be investigated whether the two have anything to do with the nursery.
At the beginning of the evening, the police received a report about the men, they were found in front of a porch and were taken to the hospital.
Part of the street and a block of houses were then cordoned off by the police for investigation, the nursery was found in a garage box. Eight homes had to be evacuated because of the investigation. Residents are expected to return to their homes later today.
The pair most likely became unwell due to a too high level of carbon monoxide in the environment, possibly caused by the hemp farm. Three officers also had to go to the hospital for a check-up because of inhaling the gases as a precaution.
The nursery will be removed by the police today. That could not be done last night because it was not safe due to the presence of the gases. The nursery was guarded at night. The hemp plants will be destroyed.
