Unpad Professor Briefly Explains How Vaccines Work

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Professor of the Faculty of Medicine, Padjadjaran University (UNPAD) Cissy Rachiana Sudjana explained how to work vaccine corona virusCovid-19) after being successfully injected into a person’s body.

The vaccine’s cell nucleus is said to make the body respond with new memories. This means that the body will remember how the vaccine tastes and works so that in the future when the body faces a similar virus it will be fought with antibodies that have been successfully built.

“After vaccination, the body’s immune response arises to produce memory cells and produce antibodies. It takes time for this immunity to emerge,” said Cissy in an online program broadcast on the FMB9ID_IKP YouTube channel, Tuesday (27/10).

Cissy also explained that each type of vaccine given to the body will have different characteristics and produce antibodies. For example, someone is injected with the Covid-19 vaccine, the antibodies will only respond to the Covid-19 virus and not other new viruses.

After the vaccination process is complete, the body’s response is called immunization.

According to Cissy, the provision of immunity to fight against this well-known virus is effective in eradicating and eliminating diseases from the world, such as smallpox, diphtheria, and polio.

“After we are injected with a vaccine or get a vaccine, the body will be stimulated and an immunological response occurs,” he said.

Then if the vaccination and immunization processes are successful, a herd immunity will be created in a group. This collective immunity is formed gradually and not instantaneously.

“And it has been proven that giving vaccines through immunization programs with high coverage to produce herd immunity,” explained Cissy.

The government has taken steps to deal with the pandemic, namely by issuing Presidential Decree Number 99 of 2020 concerning the Procurement of the Covid-19 Vaccine and Implementation of the Covid-19 Vaccination. The government also claims that the vaccines that Indonesia will buy from several countries will come next month, including Cansino, G42 or Sinopharm, and Sinovac.

Of the three vaccine candidates, in details, Cansino undertook 100 thousand vaccines (single dose) in November and around 15-20 million in 2021.

Then, Sinopharm undertook 15 million doses of vaccine (dual dose) this year. Of these, as many as 5 million doses began arriving in November. Meanwhile, Sinovac has committed 3 million doses of the vaccine by the end of December.
