Universities – Kiel – Kiel University starts the winter semester with a record number – Education

Kiel (dpa / lno) – Kiel University is entering the winter semester with a record number of 27,800 students. For the first hybrid semester with predominantly digital events, Schleswig-Holstein’s largest university welcomed 5600 new students on Monday. More than 4,200 of them are starting their university studies for the first time.

“We are pleased that each and every one of you has chosen our university,” said Uni President Simone Fulda, according to the university. This semester, due to the corona pandemic, around 90 percent of the around 2000 courses are to take place digitally.

The proportion of state children of Schleswig-Holstein among freshmen students has hardly changed compared to the previous year. A good 3,300 of them have obtained their university entrance qualification in the northernmost state, around 600 come from Hamburg.

According to the information, almost 2,200 foreigners are currently studying at Kiel University; 320 of them were added this semester; 31 students are still minors. The age of those enrolled varies between 16 and 80 years. Most students are between 19 and 28 years old. Almost 5100 of all students are prospective teachers.
