United States: young man dies of poisoning trying to save his family from the cold of Texas

A Honduran immigrant died from the carbon monoxide in Texas, in the United States, by using a generator inside his home, to try to keep his pregnant wife and young son warm.

The tragic event occurred last February 15 in the city of Fort Worth. 23-year-old Kevin Ayala and his family were inside the home, desperate to keep warm, after being without power.

“The house was very cold”said his friend Edan Pérez. So Ayala had an idea, a way for him and his family to survive the freezing temperatures that have plagued Texas for the past week.

“To keep the house warm, he put that generator inside the kitchen,” Pérez said. But the house quickly filled with carbon monoxide, the family couldn’t smell anything, they didn’t even realize there was a problem.

About an hour after turning on the generator, his wife Katherin Padilla told CNN that they began to feel tired and went to sleep.

A friend passed by and found them passed out. Ayala’s wife and son were rushed to the hospital and recovered. But Ayala, who worked in construction in the US state in search of the American dream, did not make it.

“He was a very friendly person,” said his wife. “A good person and a hard worker”added. His family hopes his death will teach everyone about the dangers of carbon monoxide. Even if you’re desperate to stay warm, they said, don’t risk it.

“That is a mistake, really a mistake”, Pérez said. Ayala leaves behind his 4-year-old son and his wife, who is pregnant with their second child.
