The man was identified as Rigoberto López, 21, and sources indicated that he was homeless.
In the last two days, “The ripper” he had claimed the lives of two people, and injured two others, on line A of the New York.
“The following person was arrested in connection with the stabbing incidents that occurred in the Metro along line A”, indicated the police of New York (NYPD), before giving the name of López.
The young Brooklyn native faces five counts, including two of murder and another two of attempted murder.
The capture took place on Saturday afternoon, two days after the first López’s attack on a 67-year-old man who was walking on the platform heading to 181st Street in Wachington Heights.
Another attack was described by one of the victims, who heard: “I’ll kill you!”, although he was only injured.
The body of a 44-year-old woman was found in a pool of blood on an A train at the 207th Street station in Inwood.
The attacks forced the NYPD commissioner, Dermot Shea, to deploy more than 500 policemen in a special operation.
The New York Post newspaper had advanced Saturday night the capture of the homeless manbut their identity had not yet been revealed.
