Unilaterally laid off, hundreds of Surabaya workers hold demonstrations in front of factories

Surabaya

Hundreds laborer crowded Jalan Rungkut Industri IV Number 5-11, Tenggilis Mejoyo District, Surabaya City. They held an action after being dismissed unilaterally by the company.

According to detikJatim’s monitoring at the location, there were hundreds of men and several women wearing light blue uniforms with Unilever inscriptions on the left side of the chest. In addition, there were a number of police officers from Sabhara and Satlantas Polrestabes Surabaya who participated in securing the action.

Luckily, the action did not interfere with traffic around the location. Motorcyclists and cars can still pass on the north and east sides of SEER. Meanwhile, the orator said through a megaphone that this activity was protesting the unilateral layoffs by the company.

“This is a meeting between friends (labor) and PUK PT Unilever. Today, we deliberately gathered and proved that Spsi and friends are still solid, the company arbitrarily laid off unilaterally,” shouted the orator through loudspeakers, Wednesday (30/3/2022).

Meanwhile, Deputy Chairman of PUK SPSI Unilever Indonesia in Surabaya, David Eko Irwanto, said this action was to convey aspirations regarding the decision of PT Unilever Indonesia to terminate the employment relationship (PHK) which was considered unilateral.

David said, the employees felt aggrieved by the unilateral layoffs.

“We also pray together in front of the factory. Let’s have a discussion, the discussion is regulated in the law as well,” David said when met by detikJatim at the location, Wednesday (30/3/2022).

David explained, a total of 750 people were victims of unilateral layoffs. However, he did not explain in detail about the part and who was allegedly laid off by PT Unilever Indonesia.

“There were 750 people (in layoffs), previously 161 people indicated they wanted to be processed by the management, all of whom were permanent employees,” he said.

David hoped that there would be a bipartite line or communication with management. According to him, with good discussions and no layoffs, it is considered that there will be a solution.

“Hopefully there will be no layoffs or terminations unilaterally, our people are a family between father and son, not found outside the home,” he said.

According to David, he and hundreds of other employees have stopped their activities since last Monday (28/9/2022). He claimed, the factory will also suspend operations in the coming week.

“The factory was closed for 1 week,” he added

David explained that layoffs should not be carried out on loyal employees. Because, he and a number of his colleagues have worked for more than 10 years.

“There are those who are at the longest up to 28 years, the average is over 10 years who have been laid off, there have been summons one by one since Tuesday (29/3/2022), unilateral notification but we decided not to come,” he said.

Meanwhile, PT Unilever’s Chief Safety Officer, Heri Bujang, when met at the location, was reluctant to comment further on the matter. According to him, this is not his domain to convey through the media.

“Sorry, I can’t comment,” he concluded.

This action lasts about 1 hour. From 10.30 to 11.30 WIB. Until now, there has been no representative from the management Unilever who met factory workers.
